Ed Schempp

Ed Schempp, a well-known knifemaker and designer, designed this knife, the Retract, for Spyderco. Is it an average EDC knife? In my eyes, no, it is not. With a kukri-like shape when open, I would say it is more a last line of defense tool for the military or for agencies. You could use it as a civilian for opening boxes. The steel they used for the blade is a Chinese steel: 9Cr18MoV. Is this the best steel? No, I don't think so, but I believe that the steel is good enough for when needed. And with the black G10 handles and back spacer mounted on skeletonized steel liners with a liner lock mechanism, Spyderco was able to keep the custom price low. Under $100 for the US market, and on the European market, you can also find it under ā¬100.
That is good for the military, because losing a less expensive knife in the field hurts less than losing a real expensive one. But hey, everybody carries what he likes.
My conclusion is, it could work for the service, it should have a place among purist Spyderco knife collectors, and it is a solid build knife with a very good quality/price value.
Do not forget to respect the laws and rules of your country.
Knives are tools, even when they have a self-defense purpose.
