Vacation

Yes, in most countries it is summer vacation. That means that many go on vacation or are planning to travel.

I think and believe that next to your backpack, suitcase, travel bag, and hand luggage, you need a small pouch that keeps some spare EDC gear and things that could help you when you need them the most. But before we dive into that, as you can see in the pictures, prepare also a solid water bottle and some reading material. In this case, I chose some travel magazines of some regions in France.

The pouch that I have chosen is just a random pouch I bought on a local market. Inside I put some spare cash, a multi-blade folding knife, a small folding multi-tool, a pen with its notebook, small bandages, a spare phone charger, an EDC pocket light, an eating utensil, a small pry bar with other functions, spare medication, chapstick, and a lighter.

I personally am going on vacation by plane this year, so I place this pouch in my suitcase, and when I arrive at my destination, that pouch goes in my sling bag. So I always have it with me. Yes, of course, you have to check the laws of the country where you go. But I'm a believer in common sense, and I will always double-check if I can travel without causing any trouble with a cutting tool.

If somebody asks me why I carry a blade, my answer is simple: I use it for peeling my fruit and cutting my food when I picnic. That is why I choose a small knife with a traditional look.

Like I said before, use your common sense and enjoy your holidays. The other gear in the pouch is there for when you lose something or when you forget something. An example I have is that about 20 years ago we traveled to Amalfi in Italy. Staying over there, we planned a boat trip to Capri. We took off early in the morning and we were in a rush. On the boat, we realized that we both forgot our documents, cards, and money. The only money I had in my shorts was 8€. That was just enough to buy 2 pieces of melon, a 50ml water bottle, and 2 postcards as a souvenir. Since that incident, I never ever went on holidays without my spare pouch. Yes, of course, with the years going by I changed out gear and tools.

It's better to prepare for your vacation and enjoy it than to be unprepared and try to solve problems if they show up.

The pouch has to be seen as a spare and has to be adapted to your needs. When you hike, travel by common transport, by bike, motorbike, car, or plane, you may have to choose some other items, or place more gear in it, depending on what you do.

Enjoy your summer and stay safe.

In the links below, you'll find the websites where I got some products that I use. But hey, you are all free to choose what you want to put in your back-up kit.
