Menorca

So yesterday we rented a guide (Júlia) who drove us in a Defender to the northern part of Menorca to visit some historical island sites and a farm where they make some delicious cheeses from cow and sheep milk. They ripen for 12 months and are really very tasty.

While driving, she spoke passionately about the different parts and different geological soils. In the south, it's all limestone with white beaches and crystal blue water, and in the north, it's iron-holding clay and slate with more yellowish sand beaches and darker turquoise seawater.

Historically, the island is interesting. Before the Phoenicians discovered the isle, it was inhabited by prehistoric tribes. The Romans came and entered the northern part of the island, so they sailed around the isle. After that, it was part of the Moors and retaken by the Christians. Now it belongs (big word) to Spain. And not to forget, the British Crown also tried to stay and rule.

Some fun facts: on the Isle you find over 11,000 km of prehistoric stone walls, all made by hand. In total, that is longer than the Great Wall of China.

The cheese has an A.O.C. label.

And they make a fantastic gin/lemon drink.

Like always, don't drink and drive.
