Thiers

Last weekend, I was in Thiers to write an article about their yearly upcoming knife show, "Coutellia," and to visit good old and new friends. Last year, the weather gods let us all sweat, but this year it was like the gods couldn't decide between rain and snow, cold or ice-cold, but that did not keep the visitors away (7200 in total). They all came to watch and buy, buying materials, art knives, kitchen knives, or eating utensils and more (this from 300 standholders). A known fact is that the big collectors are most of the time the first in line, so they can buy the knife from their favorite maker. And yes, some makers were sold out in less than a few minutes.
It's strange and crazy to write or tell that with all that is happening on our planetāeverything more expensive and living in a global economic crisisāthe knife business is still doing well. Why? My theory is that knives survive time, and you buy a piece of art, soul, and craftsmanship from the maker. Even fully industrially made knives nowadays gain some kind of value; they are made in limited batches, and humans nowadays have become collectors.
A knife you can give to your children, they can give it in time to theirs and so on and on.
Our oldest human-made tool sits deep in our genes. Cooks, woodworkers, medical workers, law enforcement, military, plumbers, and other artisans can't imagine their lives without knives. We all use knives, for all time. Knives are "F***ING" tools and "NOT" weapons. The person who transforms it into a weapon is the creator of his deed.
But that will be the internal discussion between humans.
In a nutshell, I have seen makers with happy smiles, makers that weren't happy, and others that said it was okay but it could have been better. So I wish those who sold badly better luck next time.
Next year, "Coutellia" will take place on May 15 & 16, 2027.
If you, my readers and followers, have any questions about makers or material sellers, please send me a message via my Instagram page, link below.
Like always, respect the codes and laws of your country. Use your cutting tools and enjoy life.
